Travel Safety

I have always felt fairly safe on my travels over the years. I have never found myself in a situation where I have feared for my life or health. The most worrying time has been when a very large and well built guy helped a little more than we needed with my wheelchair when getting off a boat in Indonesia and then wanted payment for the help he had given which we hadn't wanted. It ended up getting heated and a bit of a confrontation but it wasn't worth the hassle and risk for the sake of less than a pound.
Oh yes and of course that time we very nearly got mugged in Downtown San Francisco. I'm sure there is a more sinister element out there but by using common sense and a bit of local knowledge you can stay as safe as anywhere else in the world. Are you worried about being attacked whilst abroad?

I have just arrived home following an 11 month trip travelling alone n Australia and Asia. Obviously I read about all the recent attacks on backpackers but never really thought about being attacked myself.

Generally backpacking in these countries is very safe and as long as you stay alert and try to remain sensible (!) it is very unlucky if you find yourself in any danger.

My advice would be to remember to use the same caution you would normally use at home. To listen to local advice and remember to listen to that little voice inside of you that says that something is not right. It could save your life.

On the whole things will be fine .. but caution should need not stop you enjoying yourself.

Travel Safety

With recent events in the news regarding the murder of Peter Falconio we must all bear in mind the dangers whilst travelling abroad.

Its not the first thing we would want to think about - after all, we are dreaming of tropical beaches and starry nights. However in a travel situation we often put ourselves in situations that we would normally avoid when back at home.

Do you have any stories of close calls - or even just some advice to your fellow travellers?
